I will Dwell [poetry/meditation]

I will dwell

BC:AD

This was the moment when Before
Turned into After, and the future’s
Uninvented timekeepers presented arms.

This was the moment when nothing
Happened. Only dull peace
Sprawled boringly over the earth.

This was the moment when even energetic Romans
Could find nothing better to do
Than counting heads in remote provinces.

And this was the moment
When a few farm workers and three
Members of an obscure Persian sect
Walked haphazard by starlight straight
Into the kingdom of heaven.

  • Find a place to sit quietly.
  • You may like to spend some time just listening to the sounds around you.
Focus on these sounds, one by one.
  • Now focus on the sound within you; your breathing, your heartbeat, your thoughts.
  • Let yourself come to a place of rest.
  • Be aware of God’s loving eyes watching over you.
  • As you pray ask God for the grace to be open to the dwelling of God in you and in the world.

Read this passage from Zechariah 2. What words or phrases strike you?

Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! For lo, I will come and dwell in your midst, says the Lord. Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day, and shall be my people; and I will dwell in your midst. And you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. The Lord will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again choose Jerusalem.
